Obituary

George H. Brightman, 91, of New Bedford died May 6, 2008 at St. Luke's Hospital after a brief illness.
He was the husband of the late Sarah M. (McMullen) Brightman.
Born in New Bedford, the son of the late Noah and Martha (Marsland) Brightman, he lived in New Bedford all of his life.
Mr. Brightman was formerly employed by the City of New Bedford for many years where he served as Superintendent of the Water Department and Commissioner of the Department of Public Works until retirement.
He served in the U.S. Army during World War II participating in the battles of Tunisia, Sicily, Normandy, Northern France and the Rhineland. Mr. Brightman was the recipient of the European African Middle Eastern Theater Campaign Ribbon, Purple Heart with Oak Leaf Cluster, Bronze Star Medal, World War II Victory Medal and the Good Conduct Medal.
Survivors include his daughter, Nancy Kawa, and her husband Chester, of Dalton, GA; a nephew, Michael Wilbur, and his wife Patricia, of Dartmouth; 3 nieces, Noella Joao, Rosemarie Moniz, and her husband John, and Ann Marie Viveiros, and her husband Mario, of New Bedford; his special friends, Anabelle Christy of New Bedford and Ron Barber of Dalton, GA.

His Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Saturday at 9 AM in Holy Name of the Sacred Heart of Jesus Church. Burial will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery. Visiting hours Friday 4-8 PM in the Saunders-Dwyer Home For Funerals, 495 Park St. New Bedford. In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital, P.O.
