Mr. George J. Ciampo Sr, age 89, died Saturday May 3, 2008, at the Winchester Hospital after a very brief illness. Born in Bethel, VT, George was the beloved son of the late Josephine (Petrillo) & Angelo Ciampo.
Coming to Woburn at an early age, George attended Woburn Public Schools. After High School he joined the US Army. He served proudly from June 1942 to November 1945. After returning to Woburn he decided on a career in law enforcement. On September 29, 1952 he joined the Woburn Police Reserve Patrol. On February 21, 1955 he was promoted to the City of Woburn Police Department. He retired on October 19, 1982 after 30 years on the force.
In retirement he spent many hours on the lakes and ponds fishing. His favorite spot was on Cobbet's Pond in Southern New Hampshire. He also enjoyed his mornings he spent will his friends in East Woburn and the occasional trip to the casinos. But most of all it was time he spent with his family and especially his grandchildren.
George was the beloved husband of the late Margaret "Sis" (Ball) Ciampo. Devoted father of Jacqueline Campbell and her husband Gary of Westfield, George J. Ciampo Jr. and his fiancé Alice Doyle of Billerica, Sherri Donohoe and her husband Paul of Woburn. Also survived by 5 loving grandchildren and 4 loving great grandchildren. Twin Brother of Patrick Ciampo of Oceanside, CA and the late Carl, Anthony and Alice Ciampo. Also survived by several loving nieces and nephews.
Funeral from the McLaughlin-Dello Russo Funeral Home, 60 Pleasant St., Woburn, Wednesday at 9 AM. Followed by a funeral mass celebrated in St. Charles Church, 280 Main St., Woburn at 10 AM. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend. Visiting hours Tuesday 4 thru 8. Services will conclude with burial at Calvary Cemetery, Woburn.
It has been requested that in lieu of flowers memorial contributions be made in George's name to the Children's Hospital Trust, One Autumn Street #731, Boston, MA 02215-5301.
