Arthur J. Rowell, 78, of Brockton died Wednesday, April 30, 2008 at Signature Healthcare-Brockton Hospital after lengthy illness. Born and raised in Boston, he was a son of the late William and Cecilia (Joy) Rowell and had been a resident of Brockton for the past 25 years. He enlisted in the US Navy during WW II and following his discharge, became a professional boxer and held various occupations before retiring from Crystal Transport in Boston. For the last ten years Mr. Rowell had resided in Belair Towers and offered his help to its residents. He enjoyed watching sports and visiting family and friends.
He is survived by a son, Lt. Arthur Gutting, USN of Norfolk, VA and two daughters from Massachusetts, Katherine Kelly of Squantum and Beverly Murphy of Palmer and six grandchildren. He was the brother of Mike Rowell and Louise Kelly both of Quincy; Lillian Dunleavey, Ellen Rosatti and Cecilia Doran all of Dorchester; Theresa Turner of Weymouth and the late William Rowell and Rita Norton. He was a longtime companion of the late Sylvia Gutting.
There will be a Memorial Gathering in the J. Frank Conley Funeral Home, 138 Belmont Street, Brockton, on Tuesday from 11-12:30 pm.
