BEVERLY: Oliver C. Brett, 81, died Monday, April 21, 2008 in the Kaplan Family Hospice House, Danvers following a brief illness. He was the husband of Irene (Rostron) Brett.
Born in Middleboro on May 14, 1926, he was the son of the late Oliver C., Sr. and Grace E. (Gardner) Brett. He was a graduate of Middleboro High School class of 1944 and the Lowell Institute of M.I.T. He had resided in W. Boxford for many years before moving to Beverly in 1977. He was also a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.
Oliver was employed as a machine designer at the United Shoe Machine Corp. in Beverly for thirty-six years before his retirement in 1988.
An avid sailor, he built several boats and was a member of the Coast Guard Auxiliary and the Bass Haven Yacht Club. He was also a member of the V.F.W. Post #545 of Beverly and a longtime member of the Dane Street Congregational Church, where he served as a collector. Active in Boy Scouts, he was once a Scout Master of Troop #68. Oliver and Irene also enjoyed traveling the United States together.
In addition to his wife of fifty-four years, he is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Robert C. and Deborah L. (Atkins) Brett of East Kingston, NH, a daughter, Carolyn J. Martin of Swampscott, two granddaughters, Kathryn Brett of Amesbury and Meghan Heywood of Atkinson, NH and many nieces and nephews. He was also predeceased by a cousin, Adelaide Atwood.
His funeral services will be held on Friday in the Dane Street Congregational Church, Beverly at 11 a.m. Visiting hours will be held on Thursday in the Grondin Funeral Home, 376 Cabot Street, Beverly from 4 – 8 p.m. Relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in his memory to the Dane Street Congregational Church, 10 Dane St., Beverly, MA 01915. Interment will be held in the Mt. Vernon Cemetery, W. Boxford.
