Owned and Operated Singleton’s Orchards
Robert Singleton, 76, of East Bridgewater, husband of Pauline (Adams) Singleton, died Saturday at his home surrounded by his family.
Born in Whitman, son of the late William Singleton and Ethel (Nichols) (Singleton) Riggs, he attended Whitman High/class of 1951 where he excelled in sports. He was captain of the Football Team, a well known slugger on the baseball team and was known as “Singy” to his teammates.
Bob had been a resident of East Bridgewater for 55 years in a home that he and his wife designed and built, partially of lumber harvested from their lot. Bob started his own plumbing business after serving as an apprentice plumber for 6 years. When he retired from the plumbing business, he worked for the Town of East Bridgewater serving as head of maintenance for the newly built Town Hall.
After retiring from the town, Bob founded Singleton’s Orchard, a “you- pick-your-own” farm where his specialty was growing apples, blueberries, peaches and various vegetables. He also was quite the baker, serving home made pies from his own secret recipe. Bob loved working on the farm and especially enjoyed giving the visiting children a ride in his home-built hay wagon. Bob enjoyed “tinkering”, and often times created useful and clever gadgets that made work easier on his farm.
Bob leaves his wife, Pauline ( Adams) Singleton: three children Shirley Singleton of Essex, MA, Bobby Singleton of Virginia, and Scott Singleton of East Bridgewater; a sister Marjorie Chandler of Florida: two grandchildren, Matthew and Caroline Singleton of East Bridgewater; several nieces and nephews.
