CHERRY VALLEY-Apostol “Paul” Martiros, 83, of Cherry Valley, died Saturday, April 5th in UMass-Memorial Hospital. He leaves his wife of 53 years, Beverly A. (Curran) Martiros; three sons, Gregory P. and his wife, Mary K. Martiros of Oakham, Michael J. and his wife, Kathryn A. Martiros of Leicester and Richard P. Martiros of Spencer; his daughter, Sandra J. Hartwell of Simi Valley, CA; a brother, Vasil “William” Martiros and his wife, Cecily of Mashpee; 10 grandchildren, 2 great grandchildren and several nephews and nieces. A brother, Kristo Martiros predeceased him.
He was born in Lashove, Albania the son of Mina and Loni (Prifti) Martiros and came to Charlton in 1938. Mr. Martiros was a World War II veteran serving with the Navy. He was a graduate of Worcester Junior College and attended Union College. Mr. Martiros retired in 1981 from American Optical as an engineer, receiving two patents for his work in eyeglass development, previously he had been employed by General Electric in Schenectady, New York. He was an active member of St. Mary’s Assumption Albanian Orthodox Church and its Men’s Club; he also served on the Leicester Board of Health for 12 years and was a former member of Heritage Country Club. He will be remembered as a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather. Mr. Martiros loved golf, gardening and was an avid reader.
The funeral is Wednesday, April 9th from O’CONNOR BROTHERS FUNERAL HOME, 592 Park Avenue with a service at 11:00 AM in St. Mary’s Assumption Albanian Orthodox Church, 535 Salisbury Street. Burial will be in Hope Cemetery. Calling hours are Tuesday, April 8th from 5:00 until 8:00 PM in the funeral home, a trisagion service will be held at 6:30 PM. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Mary’s Assumption Albanian Orthodox Church, 535 Salisbury Street, Worcester, MA 01609.
