Edith Beatrice (Canham) Carter, 97, of Norton died peacefully on Saturday April 5, 2008 at the Epoch Senior Care Center in Norton. She was the beloved wife of the late Luther O. Carter who passed away in 1991. They were wed on October 25, 1936.
Born in Raynham, MA on September 13, 1910 she was a daughter of the late Frederick and Clara (Smith) Canham.
Edith Grew up in Raynham and was a 1927 graduate of Taunton High School and later graduated in 1934 from the Morton Hospital School of Nursing. She practiced nursing at Cape Cod Hospital until her marriage to her late husband Luther. When her children were grown, Mrs. Carter again took up nursing as a Nurse Supervisor at Paul A. Dever State School in Taunton, until her retirement, in 1970.
Mr. and Mrs. Carter lived in Attleboro during the war years, he labored in defense, and she began their family. After the war, they settled into the family’s new home in Norton where she remained a resident for the past 63 years.
An active member of the Trinitarian Congregational Church in Norton, Edith served as secretary for their Ratcliff Guild and volunteered in the Church Thrift Shop. She enjoyed spending time with people.
Mrs. Carter was an accomplished seamstress who also enjoyed reading, knitting, reminiscing and making a comfortable and happy home for her family. Following the death of her husband, she spent her summers in Maine with her daughters and her winters in Norton with her son.
She is survived by her devoted children; Luther A. Carter and his wife Margaret of South Dartmouth, George P. Carter of Norton, Mary E. L. Woodward and her husband Jack of Burlington, Maine, Margaret A. Carter of Lakeville, Maine and her late infant daughter Benita Carter, also survived by her loving 10 grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren and her many nieces and nephews who will miss her. She was the sister of the late Walter G. Canham, George H. Canham, Blanche E. Kuhlberg, Mildred I. Hartwell and Florence M. Johnson.
Funeral services, to which relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend, will be held on Wednesday April 9th at 11:00 A.M. at the Norton Memorial Funeral Home 19 Clapp St. (Off Route 140, Taunton Ave.) Norton. Burial will be private.
Visiting hours will be held on Tuesday April 8th from 4-7 P.M. at the Norton Memorial Funeral Home.
