Wallace A. Sylvia, 85 years, of Brockton died April 3, 2008 at Baypointe Rehab. & Skilled Care Center, Brockton. He was born in Brockton, son of the late Warren J. and Leonis M. (Final) Sylvia. He was a life-long resident of Brockton and a graduate of Brockton High School and the University of Notre Dame Class of 1948. He was employed for many years by Knapp Brothers Shoe Corp. and retired from Brockton Sole & Plastics, Div of Atlas Corp. For four years after retirement he was employed by the Old Colony Elderly Services as Site Manager in Easton. Mr. Sylvia was a volunteer in the Boy Scouts of America where he served for fifteen years as its first Scoutmaster. Following this he served as Neighborhood Commissioner for scouting activities in West Bridgewater. He was a Religious Education Teacher at the former St. Margaret Church in Brockton for over thirty years. He served on the CCD Board and as Student Advisor. He was also an original member of the Legion of Mary at St. Margaret. Mr. Sylvia was always interested in working with young people. He served as a Volunteer Juvenile Probation Officer at the Brockton District Court and was a member of the “Y” Century Club for many years. Mr. Sylvia was devoted to the outdoors; he was an avid camper, mountain climber and was also an avid gardener.
He is survived by two sisters Dorothy L. (Poole) Cahill and Barbara A. St. Jean and many nieces, nephews, grand nieces and nephews. He was the brother of the late John E. and Warren J. Sylvia, Jr.
Funeral from the Conley Funeral Home, 138 Belmont Street (Rte 123) Brockton Tuesday at 8am. Funeral Mass in St. Edith Stein Parish/St. Edward Church at 9am. Burial in Knollwood Memorial Park, Canton. Visiting hours Monday 2-4 & 6-8pm.
