Obituary

Alexander J. Fay, Sr., 87, a resident of Winchester for 57 years, passed away April 2nd at the Winchester Nursing Center. Born in Webster, MA he was the son of the late Alexander F. and Stella M. (King) Fay. He was raised and educated in Worcester Public Schools and subsequently attended Northeastern University and Franklin Tech. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving as a Sea Bee. While stationed in Trinidad, Al met his wife, Grace (FitzSimmons) who was also serving there as a nurse. Upon discharge, they resided in Winchester, where they were active in the community while raising their seven children. Mr. Fay was a plumbing contractor for Fay’s Plumbing and Heating, which was founded by his family in 1921. He initially worked for his uncle and then eventually became owner. He was an active volunteer in Winchester, serving on various committees, including the Planning Board and Town Meeting. He also volunteered his time at Lincoln School, the Jenks Center and Winchester Hospital, and as a coach with the Little League. He also enjoyed membership with the Knights of Columbus. Alexander was also a Past President of the Medford Rotary Club, a Past President of the MA Association of Plumbers, and a member of the Northeastern Massachusetts Plumbing and Gas Inspectors Assoc. He was also a former corporator for the Medford Savings bank and served as the Woburn Plumbing Inspector. In his spare time, Al enjoyed golfing and was a former member of the Bear Hill Country Club. He was the beloved husband for 59 years to Grace (FitzSimmons) Fay, and the loving father of Mary Fay Ciarcia and her late husband Michael of Ridgefield, CT, Patty Fay Dimetres and her husband Wayne of Annandale, VA, Jeannie Fay Barry and her husband Jim of N. Attleboro, Peggy Fay McMillan and her husband Jerry of Bethlehem, PA, Alexander J. Fay, Jr. of Winchester, Stephen J. and his wife Diane Fay of Wayland and Paul G. Fay of Winchester. He as also the devoted grandfather of Michael, Nick and Ryan Ciarcia and Mariah Murphy, Kevin, Kara and Jaclyn Dimetres, Michael and Amy Barry and Megan Martinsen, Carla, Sean, Kyle and Patrick McMillan, Morgan, Caroline, Paul, Rachel, Brian and John Fay and great-grandfather of Amelie Ciarcia, Eloise and Charlie Murphy, and Savana Martinsen. Dear brother of Mary Mahoney of Auburn, MA and the late Rev. John F. Fay. Also survived by many nieces and nephews. His Funeral will be held from the Costello Funeral Home, 177 Washington St., Winchester on Sat., April 5 @ 10AM followed by a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Mary’s Church at 11AM. Relatives and friends respectfully invited to attend. Visiting hours will be held Friday 4-8PM. Interment Wildwood Cemetery, Winchester. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to St. Mary’s Church 158 Washington St. Winchester MA 01890.
