Dominic Ruta, 82

Dominic Ruta, 82, of Norton died unexpectedly on Friday March 28, 2008 at home. He was the husband of Laura C. (Coffin) Ruta.
Born in Boston, MA on May 23, 1925 he was a son of the late Ferdinando and Theresa (Bernardi) Ruta.
He grew up in Boston and was educated in Boston public schools. During WWII Mr. Ruta proudly served his country in the United States Navy and was awarded the World War II Victory Medal. He was honorably discharged on March 7, 1946 with the rank of Seaman, First Class.
Dominic was a retired plumber at Wheaton College in Norton where he was employed for 9 years prior to retiring in 1990. He had formerly worked for several years for the Norton Water Department and was a former “Sandhog” for Local Union 66 in Boston, where amongst other projects, was involved in the construction of the Callahan Tunnel and the Wellesley Relief Sewer Extension. In 1964 Mr. Ruta was credited with saving the life of his brother Ralph and 5 other co-workers during the Callahan Tunnel Project, unfortunately 1 fellow worker lost his life and several others were injured.
A communicant of St. Mary’s Church in Norton, he enjoyed trips to Cape Cod where his favorite pastime was shell fishing, his other hobbies included gardening and he loved spending time with his grandchildren, following retirement from Wheaton College Mr. Ruta working part time at the Tweeter Center in Mansfield. A resident of Norton for the past 48 years, he was formerly of the Mattapan section of Boston.
In addition to his wife he is survived by his devoted children; Theresa L. Ruta of Georgia, Christopher D. Ruta and his wife Therese of Norton and Laura G. Keene and her husband Guy of Norton. He was the brother of Helen Stevenson of Brookline, Angelina Doherty of Hyde Park, Ralph Ruta of Mattapan and the late Joseph Ruta and Thomas Ruta, also survived by his loving grandchildren; Alyssa Ruta, Christopher Ruta and Elizabeth Ruta and Brady Keene and Juliana Keene as well as several nieces and nephews.
His funeral Mass, to which relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend, will be celebrated on Friday April 4th at 9:00 A.M. in St. Mary’s Church South Worcester St. Norton. Burial with military honors will follow at 11:00 A.M. in the Massachusetts National Cemetery, Bourne.
Visiting hours have been omitted. In lieu of flowers donations in Dominic’s memory may be made to the American Heart Association 20 Speen St. Framingham, MA 01701.
