William J. Hebner, 91 of Norwood died March 26 in the Avery Manor in Needham. He was the husband of the late Margaret (Cunnane) Hebner who died in 1985.
Born in Boston, January 9, 1917, the son of the late William and Sophie Hebner, Mr. Hebner was raised in the West Roxbury section of Boston and had lived in Norwood since 1945.
He was a graduate of the Boston Trade School.
Mr. Hebner had been the superintendent of 7 private Jewish Cemeteries in Boston for many years.
In his youth, he had worked for the Boston Bruins as a helper at their games.
He had also been a member of the Charles River Canoe Club.
Mr. Hebner served in the Navy during World War II.
He was an avid bowler and had one time played on a team named the gravediggers.
He is survived by his sons, William Hebner, Brian Hebner and Robert Hebner, all of Norwood and Richard and Dennis Hebner, both of Walpole.
He was the brother of the late Ruth Trask.
He is also survived by 14 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren.
His funeral will be held on Monday, March 31 from the Ginley Funeral Home, 892 Main St. in Walpole at 8:00 a.m. followed by a funeral Mass in St. Catherine’s Church in Norwood at 9:00.
Burial will be in Highland Cemetery in Norwood.
Visiting hours will be on Sunday from 4-8 p.m.
