Louise Matthews Smith, of Mystic, died peacefully on Sunday, March 23, 2008.
Louise was born in Portsmouth, NH on August 2, 1917 to Curtis and Beatrice Henley Matthews. She lived in Portsmouth until she entered Wellesley College, graduating in 1938.
Louise married Stanley Smith of Los Angeles, CA in 1939. He predeceased her in May, 2007. Their children and spouses are Stanley Jr. and Lois Smith of Stockton, CA; Susan and Walter Keach of Mystic, Sara and David Holdridge of Ledyard; Shirley Dougherty and Ed Kissner of Burlington, CT; and Steven and Mary Smith of Bath, NH.
She is also survived by 10 grandchildren and their spouses, John and Meg Holdridge, Stanley III and Debbie Smith, Jeff Bernier, Julie Bernier and Bill Healey, Paige S. and John Boles, Dan and Jamie Dougherty, Jenny H. and Rich Catrambone, RJ and Ruthie Smith, Victoria Holdridge and Allison Dougherty. Her family also includes 13 great-grandchildren.
Devotion to her family has been Louise’s life. As time allowed she enjoyed working for and with many organizations. Her lifelong interests have been the Mystic Congregational Church, the Mystic Noank Library, The Red Sox, and her passion for the comradery and challenge of bridge games.
A service celebrating Louise’s life will be held this Saturday, April 12th at 4pm at the Mystic Congregational Church with a reception following. She will be interred in the Elm Grove Cemetery in Portsmouth, NH at a later date.
