Obituary

Laconia-Roger Joseph Gonyer, 77, of 17 Batchelder Street died peacefully Sunday morning, March 23, 2008 at his home surrounded by his family.

A lifelong resident, Roger was born in Laconia on August 15, 1930, the son of the late Alfred and Yvonne (Breton) Gonyer.

Prior to his retirement, Roger was employed by the City of Laconia, Department of Public Works as a heavy equipment operator for over 18 years. Upon his retirement in recognition of his exemplary service Roger Gonyer Day was proclaimed in the City of Laconia. He had also worked at Scott & Williams before its closure.

Honorably serving his country during the Korean War, Roger is a United States Army veteran. He was a member of the American Legion, Wilkins-Smith Post #1 in Laconia. Roger was an avid fisherman and hunter, and he was one who loved the ocean and his truck.

Besides his parents Roger is predeceased by two brothers, Henry and Alfred Gonyer; three sisters, Anne Hanes, Betty Paquette, and Irene Boucher.

Roger is survived by his wife of 47 years, Dorothy (Gilbert) Gonyer of Laconia; three sons, Stephen Gonyer of Laconia, Mark Gonyer of Belmont, and Alfred Gonyer and his wife Young Ran of Hanscom Air Force Base, Bedford, Massachusetts; one daughter, Sharon Eaton of York, Maine; one brother, George Gonyer of Gilford; one step-son, Clifford Moore of Texas. Three grandchildren, Sarah Eaton, Sean Eaton, and Kaitlyn Gonyer, as well as many nieces and nephews also survive Roger.

Visiting hours were Wednesday, March 26, 2008 from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at the Simoneau-Paquettte Memorial Home, 139 Church Street, Laconia.

Graveside Services with Military Honors were held Thursday, March 27, 2008 at 11:00 a.m. at the New Hampshire State Veterans Cemetery, 110 Daniel Webster Highway, Rte 3, Boscawen, NH. Edward Mullen, Pastoral Minister of Immaculate Heart of Mary Church in Concord officiated.

The funeral procession formed at Simoneau-Paquette Memorial Home, 139 Church Street, Laconia, at 10:00 a.m. for those who wished to join the family in accompanying Roger to the cemetery.
