Joseph J. Carreiro, 80, of New Bedford, after a courageous fight against cancer, passed away Saturday, March 22, 2008, at home with his family by his side. He was the husband of Emily W. (Dillion) Carreiro. In June of this year they would have celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary.
Born in S. Dartmouth, raised in Brooklyn, NY, he was the son of the late Joseph and Georgiana (Botelho) Carreiro and had resided in New Bedford for most of his life. Mr. Carreiro dedicated time to Mother Theresa’s Sisters of Charity in helping those in need. He was a machine operator for the former Alden Corrugated Company until his retirement in 1990. His sense of humor was well known and beloved by family and friends alike. He was a WWII veteran who served in the U.S. Army. Mr. Carreiro was a member of the D.A.V. Chapter 7 of New Bedford.
In addition to his wife he is survived by 2 sons: John J. Carreiro of New York and Richard D. Carreiro of California; 1 daughter Cheryl A. Pacheco of New Bedford; 1 brother Richard Carreiro of New Bedford; 1 sister: Norma Sylvia of Westport; 4 grandchildren; 4 great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. He was the brother of the late: Donald Carreiro, Marie McPherson and Georgianna Erickson.
Funeral to which relatives and friends are invited to attend will be Wednesday, March 26, 2008 at 8:30 A.M. from the KIRBY FUNERAL HOME, 61 Tarkiln Hill Road, New Bedford followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at Holy Name Church, Mt. Pleasant Street, New Bedford at 10:00 A.M.
Calling hours will be Tuesday 2-4 & 7-9 P.M.
Internment service will be private.
