BEVERLY: Richard E. “Dick” Maitland, 66, formerly of Swampscott, died peacefully Wednesday morning, March 19th 2008 at Salem Hospital after a long, courageous battle with ALS. He was the beloved husband of Patricia (Sanguedolce) Maitland and the devoted father of Scott, and his wife Ilana Maitland of Cambridge and Bethany Nottingham and her husband, Eric of Beverly. Dick was also the loving grandfather of Evan, Adam and Ryan Maitland and Jack and Paige Nottingham.
Born and raised in Swampscott, he was the son of the late Francis and Veronica (Keenan) Maitland. He is also survived by a sister, Ann Whittemore of Salem, a brother, Francis Maitland, and his wife Joanne of Stuart, FL and a sister-in-law, Mary Noonan, and her husband, Michael of Salem, NH. He will be dearly missed by several nieces, nephews and many friends.
Dick was a retired teacher and long-time girls’ soccer coach at Beverly High School, where he served as an inspiration to many of his students and players. Dick’s impressive coaching record of 238-61 culminated with him being named Boston Globe Division I Coach of the Year in 1997.
Dick graduated from Swampscott High School where he was a proud member of the Big Blue football team that went undefeated in 1957. He received an undergraduate degree from Fitchburg State College and a master’s degree from Cambridge College. Dick was also a veteran of the United States Navy submarine service.
While living in Swampscott, he served as the Emergency Management Director for the town for 20 years and president of Swampscott Youth Soccer for 2 years. He was also a lifetime member of the Swampscott Yacht Club and a member of the Submarine Veterans Base of Marblehead.
Dick enjoyed traveling with his wife, skiing, boating and spending time with his children and grandchildren. He will be sorely missed by all that knew him.
A memorial service in celebration of his life will be held on Saturday morning, March 29th in the First Church in Swampscott at 10 a.m. Relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend. There are no visiting hours.
