John J. Gonsalves, Sr., 85, of New Bedford died Thursday March 20, 2008 unexpectedly at home.
Born in New Bedford, the son of the late Julio and Rose (Barboza) Gonsalves, he lived in New Bedford for most of his life.
Mr. Gonsalves was formerly employed as a longshoreman and forklift operator until his retirement.
He was a member of the United Social Club.
Survivors include six children, John J. Gonsalves, Jr. of Dartmouth, Richard Gonsalves and William Gonsalves, both of Newport, RI, Antonio Gonsalves of Las Vegas, NV, Ricardo Gonsalves and Lita Gonsalves, both of Jamaica Plain; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.
He was the brother of the late Isabelle Strong, Mary Toppin, Rose Gomes, and Julia Cabral.
His Funeral Service will be held on Tuesday at 11 AM at the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New Bedford. Burial will follow in Acushnet Cemetery. Visiting hours Monday 4-8 PM. For directions and guestbook, please visit www.saundersdwyer.com.
