William H. Halstead, 85, of Westport passed away Thursday, March 20, 2008 at St. Luke’s Hospital. He was the husband of Hilda (Pearce) Halstead.
Born in Maxbass, ND, son of the late Elmer and Mabel C. (Jackson) Halstead, he had lived in Westport since 1948. A career United States Navy serviceman, he was a WWII veteran. He served as Chief Pettey Officer Master of Arms at Justice School at the Newport Naval Base in Newport, RI prior to retiring from the service. He also worked as a machine operator at the former Congdon & Carpenter of Fall River. Mr. Halstead enjoyed playing cribbage, playing the guitar and talking with people.
Including his wife, he is survived by 2 sons: Walter A. Halstead of Athens, TN and William A. Halstead of Fall River; a brother: Derald Halstead of NY; 3 sisters: Florence Milbrath of ND, Violet Goodwin of AR and Pearl Tengsdal of ND; step-brother: Ralph Halstead of WA; 4 grandchildren; 2 great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
He was brother of the late Myrtle Kirby and Luvern Bipple and step-brother of the late Lester Halstead and Donald Halstead.
Funeral to which relatives and friends are invited will be Wednesday, March 26, 2008 at the Potter Funeral Home at 10:30 A.M. with visitation 1 hour prior from 9:30 - 10:30 A.M.
Interment in Beech Grove Cemetery, Westport.
