Gladys E. Birong, 99 of Providence, died Sunday, March 16, 2008 at the Scandinavian Home in Cranston. She was the wife of the late Frank Birong.
Born in Providence, she was the daughter of the late Frank E. and Carolyn (Falk) Walters. She had been a resident most her life except for five years during the 1930’s during the Great Depression when she moved with her husband and son to Niles, Michigan.
During her high school years she attended what was then called Providence Commercial High School and also Bryant College which was at that time called Bryant and Stratton Business School. She was a secretary in the former A& P Tea Company and later worked in the Advertising Department of the former Hamel-Dahl Company in Warwick.
A lover of the Arts, she found pleasure in painting in oils and pastels, writing poetry and playing and composing music for the piano. She was the former Elmwood Congregational-Christian Church where she was for a time the church secretary.
She is survived by her son, Ronald Birong of Bristol and many nieces and nephews.
A private funeral service was held in the chapel in Highland Memorial Cemetery, Johnston.
