William Ames Leighton, Jr., 93, of Londonderry, NH, died Tuesday, March 18, 2008 in the Elliot Hospital in Manchester, NH. Mr. Leighton was born in Fitchburg, MA on September 1, 1914, a son of the late William A. and Clara (Lincoln) Leighton, Sr. He was a resident of Londonderry for the past 12 years, formerly living in Northwood, NH and Winchester, MA. Mr. Leighton was a graduate of the University of Mass in 1937 where he was a member and past president of Theta Chi Fraternity. He was employed for many years for the John H. Pray & Co. in Boston, MA working his way up to vice president. Mr. Leighton was active in the Winchester, MA town government. He was an avid gardener, outdoor enthusiast, bird watcher and a talented woodworker. While semi retired, he had been employed by Endicott Furniture in Concord, NH.
He is survived by his wife, Phyllis L. Leighton of Londonderry; one son, William A. Leighton, III of Houston, TX; two daughters, Sally L. Clutter of Concord, MA, and Janice L. Brink of Windham, NH; eight grandchildren; 13 grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.
Friends called on Saturday, March 22nd from 1 - 4pm in the Peabody Funeral Homes and Crematorium, 290 Mammoth Rd., Londonderry. A memorial service was held on Monday, March 24th at 11:30am in the Crawford Memorial United Methodist Church, 34 Dix St., Winchester, MA. Private burial will be in the Wildwood Cemetery in Winchester.
