Joyce V. (Henderson) Lewis, 78, of Wareham, formerly of New York City died January 28, 2003 at Forestview Nursing Home.
She was the daughter of the late Charles and Ethel (Sparks) Henderson.
Mrs. Lewis was born in Jamaica, and had lived in New York City for close to 50 years, before moving to Wareham in 2003.
She was a well-respected registered nurse at several New York City Hospitals until her retirement. She worked hard at attempting to form a nurse's union during the 80's, and was always proud to be a political leftist. An avid reader, especially of poetry and plays, she could recite large sections of Omar Khayyam's, The Rubaiyat from memory. Over the course of her life, she wrote a number of poems and plays. She loved music and listened to everything from Tchaikovsky to Louis Armstrong. She especially enjoyed taking long walks in Riverside Park, commenting on James Bond movies, watching CNN, cheering on the N.Y. Yankees, and living in New York City.
Mrs. Lewis had a witty sense of humor, a bright, insightful mind, some wild and playful ways, and a good and kind heart. She will be missed with sadness and remembered with love.
Survivors include a daughter, Sydney F. Lewis of Rochester; a nephew, Carlos McLeod of Middleboro; a niece, Joyce McLeod of Jamaica; and her dear friend, John Clement of New York.
She was the sister of the late Veronica McLeod.
Her Funeral Services were private.
