Mary (Diniz) White, 87, a longtime Mystic resident, passed away on Friday, March 14, 2008.
Mary was born in Fall River, MA on August 20, 1920. The Diniz family returned to Funchal, on the island of Maderia, (Portugal) in 1925 where Mary attended local schools. Mary returned to the US in 1940, followed shortly by her parents, Antonio and Theresa Diniz, her brothers Manuel and John, and her sister Conceicao, finally settling in New Bedford, MA.
Mary worked in the New Bedford textile industry until 1955, when she met and married Frank S. White Jr. of Mystic, CT. Mary has lived in Mystic ever since, working as a homemaker and mother of their only child, Frank III.
Mary and her husband were avid gardeners, growing and preserving most of the family's vegetables and fruits. They retired in 1975, and then toured until Frank's death in 1979.
In recent years, Mary most enjoyed visiting, shopping, and dining with her good friends in Mystic and Groton, as well as being a proud and loving grandmother to her only grandchild, Frank IV.
Mary is survived by her son, Frank, and his wife Tracy, and their son Frank of Norwell, MA. She is also survived by her brother, John Diniz of Santa Clara, CA; her sister Conceicao Rodrigues; her sister-in-law, Florence Diniz, both of New Bedford, as well as several nieces and nephews.
Her family will greet relatives and friends at The Dinoto Funeral Home, 17 Pearl Street, Historic downtown Mystic on Wednesday from 8:30 – 9:30am., followed by a Funeral Mass at St. Patrick Church at 10am celebrated by Fr. Brian Romanowski, Pastor. Burial will follow at St. Patrick Cemetery, Old Mystic.
