Obituary

Clifford L. Mencer, 88, of Mystic, passed away Thursday, March 5, 2008.
He was born October 12, 1919 in Jersey Shore, PA the son of Harry W. Mencer and Sarah Zettle Mencer. He was also the brother of Robert, Charles, Ruth and Norma; all who predeceased him.

Clifford graduated from Jersey Shore High School where he was in the band and on the football team. He attended Dickinson Junior College on a football scholarship. After graduation, Clifford enlisted in the United States Marine Corps and served in the South Pacific in the USMC 12th Defense Battalion during WWII. During the war, Clifford participated in action at Woodlark Island, Cape Gloucester and in the fierce fighting at Peleliu in the Palau Islands.

In August 1948, Clifford married the former Jean Scales of Concord, NH. They moved to Mystic in 1952 where Clifford took a job with the Electric Boat Corporation. He retired from E.B. after 35 years of service.

Clifford was very involved in the community, serving on the vestry of St. Mark's Episcopal Church, coaching Little League, as president of the SB Butler PTA and board member of the Groton Public Library.

Besides his wife, Clifford is survived by his son, William Mencer and his wife Michelle Mencer of Mystic; his daughter Mary Mencer Schenk and her husband Edward K. Schenk of Groton; as well as 8 grandchildren and 1 great-grandchild.

A Memorial Service will be conducted at St. Mark's Episcopal Church, Mystic on Friday, March 14th, at 11:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, gifts may be made to Fairview/Odd Fellows' Home, 243 Lestertown Road, Groton, CT 06340.
