Robert Quarterman Cassels, 89, of Mattapoisett, Massachusetts and formerly of Atlanta, Georgia passed away Saturday, March 8, 2008 at Tobey Hospital after a long illness. Born in Atlanta, Georgia he was the youngest child of Louie Jones Cassels and Hallie Jones Cassels. He attended Kirkwood Elementary School, Boys High School and graduated from the University of Georgia School of Commerce in 1941. While at the University of Georgia, he majored in Business Administration and took an active part in campus life, being president of Alpha Tau Omega Fraternity, president of the Junior Class, president of the Demosthenian Debating Society, a member of the Gridiron Club, Blue Key Honorary Society and chairman of the board of directors of Biftad. After joining the United States Navy he served during W.W. II aboard the U.S.S. Massachusetts (BB-59) from 1942 until 1945 as Lieutenant in the South Pacific. During his 3 year service he was entitled to wear the American Theater Ribbon, the Pacific Asiatic Ribbon, the Pre Pearl Harbor Ribbon, and the Philippine Liberation Ribbon, and 12 Campaign Stars. After W.W. II, Bob was a commercial real estate salesman and broker, and property manager. He was a Life Member of the Druid Hills Golf Club, MOWW, and the Civil War Round Table. He served as a deacon and elder in the Emory Presbyterian Church. Since moving to Massachusetts he has been a member of the Mattapoisett Congregational Church. Bob was a kind and loving man. He enjoyed spending time with his family, reading history, and playing tennis and golf. Survivors include his wife of 66 years, Donata Horne Cassels, his children, Donata Cassels Collier, Frederick Horne Cassels, William Louie Cassels, Robert Horne Cassels, and Julianne Cassels Craig and her husband Jonathan Craig; 4 grandchildren, Donata Monnin, Melanie Barford, Ian Craig, and Alexander Craig, 3 great-grandchildren, Ellery Monnin, Emory Barford, and Anna Barford. He was the father of their deceased daughter, Caroline Cassels, father-in-law of the late John Christopher Collier and the great-grandfather of the late Daniel John Barford.
His Memorial Service will be held on Saturday March 15th at 2 PM in the Mattapoisett Congregational Church followed by a reception in the church hall.
