Obituary

Woodrow W. “Woody” Woollum, 87, of New Bedford, formerly of Dayton, Ohio passed away Wednesday, March 5, 2008 at the New Bedford Jewish Convalescent Home. He was the husband of the late Sofie (Mitter) Woollum.

Born in Hazard, Kentucky, the son of the late Letch and Emma (Gamble) Woollum, he lived in Ohio for most of his life.


Woody was formerly employed as an electrical engineer for Western Electric in Dayton. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and was a recipient of the Asiatic-Pacific Theater Ribbon, the American Theater Ribbon, the American Defense Service Medal and the Good Conduct Ribbon. He was a Kentucky Colonel and a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion.

He is survived by three daughters, Linda L. Ross of New Bedford, Dianne Finger of Dartmouth, and Nancy Labrecque of New Bedford; their mother, Dottie; a step-daughter, Margaret Boldman of Dayton; his grandchildren, Tracey, Lisa, Chad, David, Kenny, and Michelle; numerous great-grandchildren; his brothers, Jesse, William, Smiley, Bradley and Howard; and his sisters, Wilma Swink and Bettye Whitaker.

He was the brother of the late Andrew, Gene, Henry, Amos, and Steve Woollum.

A private family service was held on Friday afternoon at the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New Bedford. Burial will take place in Ohio.
