Robert H. Bell, Jr., 91, a lifelong resident of Mansfield died on Thursday March 6, 2008 at Caritas Norwood Hospital in Norwood. He was the beloved husband of Charlotte F. (Robertson) Bell to whom he was married to for the past 66 years.
Born in Mansfield, MA on August 25, 1916 he was a son of the late Robert H. and Della (Doucette) Bell, Sr.
He grew up in Mansfield and was educated in Mansfield schools. He served in the United States Army during WWII and was honorably discharged on January 26, 1946 with the rank of Private First Class.
Mr. Bell had worked for the former Canton Japannery Co. in Canton as a leather tanner. After the company closed he went to work for the Merckens Chocolate Co. in Mansfield for several years before retiring. Following retirement he had worked part time for several years at the former Morse & Forrester’s Variety Store on Central Street in Mansfield.
A communicant of St. Mary’s Church in Mansfield, he had also served as a collector at the church for several years. Bob became a Call Firefighter for the Town of Mansfield on September 8, 1947 and faithfully served the people of Mansfield for many years prior to retiring from the department. An avid sports fan he was also a member of the Mansfield VFW and following his retirement he enjoyed collecting cans and bottles for recycling.
In addition to his wife he is survived by his devoted sons Robert H. Bell, III and James W. Bell both of Mansfield, his 2 loving grandsons James W. Bell, II of Attleboro and Peter B. Bell of Sharon. He was the brother of Kenneth Bell of Humarock, Alfred Bell of Montana, Ruth DiMarzio of Foxboro and the late Harold Bell, Emma Rhoades and Barbara Choquet, also surviving are many nieces and nephews.
His funeral, to which relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend, will be held on Tuesday March 11th at 9:00 A.M. from the Sherman & Jackson Funeral Home 55 North Main St. Mansfield, followed by a Mass of Christian burial celebrated at 10:00A.M.,in St. Mary’s Church 330 Pratt St. (Route 106) Mansfield. Burial will follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Mansfield.
Visiting hours will be held on Monday March 10th from 5-8 P.M. at the Sherman & Jackson Funeral Home.
