Barbara C. (Cross) Whalen, 89, of Mattapoisett died Thursday February 28, 2008 at Sippican Healthcare Center after a brief illness. She was the wife of the late Charles H. Whalen.
Born in Melrose, the daughter of the late Walter and Florence (McPhail) Cross, she was raised in Fairhaven and lived in Mattapoisett for most of her life.
After the death of her husband, Mrs. Whalen owned and operated the Dahill Company in New Bedford until her retirement.
An accomplished musician, she played for the Fall River Symphony Orchestra, the New Bedford Symphony Orchestra, the Longwood Symphony Orchestra, and the Plymouth Philharmonic. She was a member of the Mattapoisett Yacht Club and the Mattapoisett Women's Club. She enjoyed traveling, knitting, and spending time in her garden.
Survivors include a daughter, Christine W. Ketchel of Mattapoisett; a sister, Althea C. Marvin of Niantic, CT; a son-in-law, David Anderson; and five grandchildren, Nate, Morgan, and Sarah Ketchel, and Julie and Charles Anderson.
She was the mother of the late Susan Anderson.
A private burial service will take place at Riverside Cemetery in Fairhaven. Visiting hours are omitted.
