Obituary

WORCESTER____Walter A. Hmura, of Worcester, died peacefully in the presence of his daughters Julie and Christine on February 27, 2008.

He will be remembered as a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, uncle and friend. Walter, a gentle caring man lived an abundant life centered around his family for 96 ½ years. His wife of 53 years, Julia T. (Choinski) Hmura died in 1990.

He leaves two daughters, Julie A. Zaterka and her husband Alfred of Northborough and Christine Hmura and her husband Gregory Topakian of Westborough; three grandchildren, John A. Zaterka and his wife Rita of San Francisco; Dr. Andrew P. Zaterka and his wife Daintry of Southborough and Matthew P. Zaterka and his wife Virginie Nogara of Malden; four great-grandchildren who affectionately called him “Great – Papa”, Thomas of San Francisco; and Natalie, Dylan and Annabel all of Southborough. He also leaves a brother, Anthony Hmura of Auburn; a sister, Ann Baranowski of Dudley and many nephews and nieces. He was predeceased by a brother and two sisters, Frank Hmura, Julia Bednarz and Helen Thompson. He was born in Westfield, a son of Felix and Mary (Polka) Hmura.

Mr. Hmura retired from the Worcester Wire Co. He was a proud member of the steelworkers union. He was a graduate of Commerce High School. Walter was a member of Our Lady of Czestochowa Church and was a member and officer of the St .Mary’s Booster Club. He was also a member of the Greendale Retired Men’s Club and the AARP.

Walter’s family would like to thank the staff at the Coleman House Senior Care Residence, Northborough for their compassionate care.

The funeral will be held on Monday March 3 from HENRY-DIRSA FUNERAL HOME, 33 Ward Street, with a Mass at 10:30 a.m. in Our Lady of Czestochowa Church, 34 Ward Street. Burial will be in Notre Dame Cemetery. Calling hours in the funeral home are Sunday March 2 from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to Our Lady of Czestochowa Church Memorial Fund, 34 Ward Street, Worcester, Ma., 01610.
