Obituary

Antone R. "Tony" Gomes, 84, of New Bedford died February 27, 2008 unexpectedly at St. Luke's Hospital.
He was the husband of Anna Demiciana (Lopes) Gomes whom he married in St. Mary's Church in Onset 57 years ago.
Born in New Bedford, the son of the late Antonio and Josepha (Almeida) Gomes, he lived in New Bedford all of his life.
Mr. Gomes was a parishioner of Our Lady of the Assumption Church where he was a former Eucharistic Minister.
He was formerly employed as an accountant by Teledyne Rodney Metals for many years until retirement.
Mr. Gomes served in the U.S. Army during World War II participating in the battles of the Rome Arno, North Apennines, Po Valley, Southern Philippines and Luzon. He was the recipient of the European African Middle Eastern Theater Campaign Ribbon, American Theater Campaign Ribbon, Asiatic Pacific Theater Campaign Ribbon, Philippine Liberation Ribbon with Bronze Service Star, World War II Victory Medal and the Good Conduct Medal.
He was a member of the American Legion Post 166 in Fairhaven and the N.A.A.C.P and a charter member of the Cape Verdean-American Veterans Association.
Mr. Gomes enjoyed volunteering as a docent at the New Bedford Whaling Museum, oil painting, and traveling.
Survivors include his wife; a son, James Gomes, and his wife Heidi McCue-Gomes, of Williamsburg, VA; two grandchildren, Alanna McCue-Gomes and Jesse David McCue-Gomes; three brothers, John Gomes of Boston, Joseph Gomes of New Bedford and Albert "Abbie" Gomes, and his wife Patricia Silveira, of Wareham; three sisters, Mary Gibau, Luiza Gomes and Anita Stewart, all of New Bedford; a sister-in-law, Charlotte Baptista of Onset; a brother-in-law, William Lopes of New Bedford; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was the brother of the late Emidio Gomes and James Gomes.
Funeral from the Saunders-Dwyer Home For Funerals, 495 Park St. New Bedford Monday, March 3rd at 8 AM. Funeral Mass at Our Lady of the Assumption Church at 9 AM. Burial will follow in the Massachusetts National Cemetery, Bourne. Visiting hours Sunday, March 2nd from 4-8 PM.
