Bennett Lord, 86, passed away on Friday, February 22, 2008 at Avalon Health Care Center in Mystic, Connecticut.
Mr. Lord was the son of Albert Chalker Lord and Louise Bennett Lord. Born in Indianapolis, Indiana, he grew up in Englewood, New Jersey. He was a graduate of Phillips Exeter Academy, Princeton University (1943) and Harvard Business School. He served as a Lieutenant in the United States Navy in the Mediterranean and the Pacific during World War II. He married the late Patricia Bryan Sater in 1946 and they raised their family in and near New Britain, Connecticut. Following a thirty-six year career with The Stanley Works of New Britain, he retired as Executive Chairman of Stanley Tools, Ltd., when he and Mrs. Lord made their home in Mystic, where they had spent summers since 1950.
Mr. Lord was the father of four children, Edward Bennett Lord, Margaret Sater Lord, Elizabeth (Betsie) Lord Danforth, and Amy Lord Wilkinson. In addition to his children, he is survived by a brother, James Hayden Lord, his daughter-in-law Mary Patricia Lane Lord, sons-in-law Arthur J. Kover, W. Curtis Danforth III, Bruce E. Wilkinson, and grandchildren David Bennett Wilkinson, Ariana Louise Wilkinson, and Christopher Hayden Danforth.
Mr. Lord was an avid sailor and skier, who loved history, travel, art, and music. Wherever he lived, he was an active member of his community. He was a member of the Community Chest in New Britain, a Director of New Britain Federal Savings and Loan, and a Moderator of First Church of Christ in New Britain. He also served as a Trustee of The American School for the Deaf and The Herreshoff Marine Museum. Mystic area memberships included Mystic Congregational Church, Mason’s Island Yacht Club, Mystic Seaport Pilots, Nauyaug Cruising Club, and Stonington Country Club. While living at StoneRidge, he was Finance Chairman of the Residents’ Council.
A memorial service will be held at the Mystic Congregational Church at 1pm on Saturday March 29, 2008. Private burial will precede the service at Elm Grove Cemetery.
