Herbert G. “Herb” Corliss, II 85 died Wednesday February 20th after a period failing health. He was the husband of the late Eleanor G. (Morgan) Corliss.
Born and raised in Rockland he was a son of the late Levi J. and Effie (Duffett) Corliss and attended Rockland schools.
Herb was a veteran of the United States Army from 1943 to 1945 and served as a Sergeant during World War II. He was awarded a Victory Medal, and a European-African Middle Eastern Theater Campaign Ribbon.
He was employed as a milkman by the Producer Dairy Co. for 30 years. He also owned and operated his own businesses; Corliss Print and HB Corliss Distributing as well as serving as a Justice of The Peace, Notary Public and security at the Cranberry Specialty Hospital. He later did camera work for Media One.
Herb was a resident and active member of the community of Whitman since 1946. He helped to form the Conservation Committee, and was a member of the Board of Selectman for 11 years serving part of those years as chairman, and had been a Special Police Officer since 1957.
He was a communicant of the All Saints Episcopal Church and a member of the Puritan Lodge AF&AM, VFW #697, American Legion #22, Republican Town Comm., State Republican Comm., 653 Teamsters, Massachusetts and State Retirees, and an honorary member of the Florida Sheriffs Assoc.
Mr. Corliss was an avid trout fisherman, camper and hunter.
He is survived by his children; Richard L. Corliss of Dartmouth, Herbert G. Corliss III of Whitman, William D. Corliss of Foxboro, Marsha L. Corliss of Hanson, Jacqueline A. Frasier of Yarmouth Port, Eleanor G. Baker of E. Dennis, Janice E. Churchill of Onset, and Donna J. Churchill of New Portland, ME, and one sister Pearl Hemeon of Norton. He is also survived by 23 grandchildren, 34 great grandchildren, 1 great great grandchild, and several nieces and nephews. He was the father of the late Annette M. Corliss.
His funeral service will be held Monday February 25th at 11 AM in the All Saints Episcopal Church, Park Ave, Whitman. Burial will follow in the Mount Vernon Cemetery, Abington. Visiting hours will be held Sunday February 24th from 2-4 and 7-9 PM in the Blanchard Funeral Chapel, Plymouth Street (Rt. 58 @ the rotary) Whitman. A Masonic service will be held at 7:30 PM.
