WEBSTER -Leon A. “Leo” Chlapowski, 73, of 55 Lake Street, died Tuesday, Feb. 19, at Fairlawn Rehabilitation Hospital after a long illness. His wife of 40 years, Lorraine M. “Be” (Hurd) Chlapowski, died in 2002.
He leaves 2 daughters, Lisa C. Chlapowski and Kelly M. Harrington, both of Webster; a stepson, Scott J. Hurd of North Grosvenordale, CT; a grandson, Corey Harrington; a step grandson, Aaron Hurd; 2 brothers, John Chlapowski of Dudley and Anthony Chlapowski of Laramie, Wyoming; 3 sisters, Pauline Paglione of Dudley, Eleanor Damian of Fort Worth, TX and Patricia Johnson of Webster; nephews and nieces. He was preceded in death by his brother Theodore of Webster.
He was born in Webster, a son of Chester and Agnes (Delman) Chlapowski and was a lifelong resident. He graduated from Bartlett High School and attended business college. A talented athlete, he was the captain of both the football and baseball teams at Bartlett.
He was an Air Force veteran of the Korean War.
Mr. Chlapowski was a foreman for the Department of Public Works of the Commonwealth of Mass. before retiring in 1990.
He was a member of Saint Joseph Basilica. He was an ardent Red Sox and Patriots fan. He also enjoyed spending time at Memorial Beach. Above all, he was devoted to his family.
The funeral will be held Friday, Feb. 22, from the Sitkowski & Malboeuf Funeral Home, 340 School Street, with a Mass at 10:00 AM in St. Joseph Basilica, 53 Whitcomb St. Burial, with military honors, will be in Saint Joseph Garden of Peace. Calling hours are from 6:00 to 9:00 PM Thursday, Feb. 21, in the funeral home.
