Eugene Chambers, 76, of the Pinetta Community in Irwin County died Tuesday, February 19, 2008 at Tift Regional Medical Center in Tifton.
Funeral services will be held 2 P.M., Friday, February 22, at the Old Valley Grove Primitive Baptist Church in Irwin County, with Elder Charles Tyson and Rev. Tommy Long officiating. Interment will follow in the Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7-9 Thursday evening at the funeral home in Ocilla.
Mr. Chambers was born May 23, 1931 in Iron City, GA to the late Eugene Chambers and Irelle Thompson Teel. He retired as Assistant Principal from Fitzgerald High School in 1988. Mr. Chambers was a U.S. Air Force Veteran serving in North Africa. He attended South Georgia College, Auburn University, and Graduated from Georgia Southern College with honors where he received his degrees including a Masters Degree in Administration and Physical Education staying there to teach and coach. Mr. Chambers teaching and Coaching career, covered Clayton County, Douglasville and Irwin County, where he taught math and physical education, he also taught at ABAC and then at Fitzgerald High School until his retirement. Mr. Chambers was a member of the Ben Hill-Irwin Retired Educators Association, a former member of the Lions Club and a member of several honor societies. He was a member and deacon of Old Valley Grove Primitive Baptist Church. Mr. Chambers had a great love for his family and friends and a special love for children and an interest in their welfare and training, which is what led him into the education profession.
Mr. Chambers is survived by his wife of 52 years, Shirley Whitley Chambers: daughter and son in law; Cheryl and Charles Gibson all of the Pinetta Community, Irwin County; Sister: Margaret Farnell Hill, Marianna, FL; Aunt: Louise Thompson Culbreth, Jacksonville, FL; nephew: Hank Farnell, Atlanta; niece: Gena Farnell, Tallahassee, FL and several cousins.
