Obituary

Ruth W. Delap of Groton, beloved wife of George O. Delap for 66 years, passed away on February 18, 2008 at Mystic Manor in Mystic surrounded by her family.

Born January 26, 1917 in Plymouth, CT to Frederick S. and Ruth (Emmons) Wood, she attended Terryville schools and graduated from Terryville High School in 1934. Ruth was active in the Terryville Congregational Church, and taught Sunday School classes at the church where she was wed on June 28, 1941.

She moved with her husband to Bristol, CT where they raised their two daughters. During her 25 years in Bristol, Ruth joined the Bristol Congregational Church and enjoyed teaching at their nursery school and Sunday School. She became active in Girl Scouts , and was a troop Leader for several years. At the time of her retirement in 1973 from the former Bristol Teacher’s Credit Union, she was an assistant treasurer and Loan Officer.

Ruth and her husband moved to the Groton shore and enjoyed a long and active retirement of boating, bicycling, and square dancing. She and many of her friends shared a passion for crafting, and met weekly to exchange ideas and learn new skills.

Ruth has lived for the past two years at Academy Point of Mystic. She was a member of the Mystic Congregational Church at the time of her death.

Besides her husband, she leaves her daughter, Barbara and son-in-law, John Norton of Concord, MA; her daughter Jane and son-in-law Douglas Laurencelle of Granby, CT; her grandchildren, Janet Norton and Brian Laurencelle; her brother, Frederick Wood and his wife Marcia of Terryville, CT; her sister, Barbara Augustine of Danvers, MA; her nieces, Nancy Conlan, Sylvia Wood and Ruth Testa; and her nephew, Gary Augustine.

Her family will gather for a private service. There are no visiting hours. Donations in her memory may be made to the Mystic Congregational Church, 43 East Main Street, Mystic CT 06355.
