Valjean Meeks, 90, of Ocilla died Friday, February 15, 2008 at Tift Healthcare in Tifton.
Funeral services will be held 2:00 P.M., Sunday, February 17, at the Ocilla Baptist Church, Ocilla with Dr. Jim Britt officiating. Interment will follow in the Ocilla Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7-9 Saturday evening at the funeral home in Ocilla.
Mr. Meeks was born July 13, 1917 in Ocilla, Georgia to the late Melvin and Vivian Bruce Meeks. He was a 1934 graduate of Ocilla High School, a 1936 graduate of Norman Junior College, and a 1939 graduate of Stetson University. He was a U.S. Army Air Corps Veteran of World War II serving as an Intelligence Officer in the 15th Air Corps as a Captain. He lived most of his life in Ocilla and was a former resident of Tifton and Fitzgerald. He was a retired Certified Public Accountant. He worked for the Blalock Furniture Store, Kice Stone, Fitzgerald Motor Company, Stone & Quinney and in 1960 became a partner in Quinney & Meeks, CPA. Twelve years later, he was a founding partner of what would become Meeks, Roberts, Spicer, Ashley & Sumner and worked until his retirement on January 1, 1987. Mr. Meeks served his community as a member of the Board of Directors for the Ben Hill-Irwin Technical School (now East Central Technical College). He was a member of the Ocilla Baptist Church where he was a deacon and former member of the Adult Choir. He was a former member and Past President of the Ocilla Rotary Club and Ocilla Country Club.
Mr. Meeks is survived by his son and daughter-in-law: Mel & Gail Meeks of Newnan; daughter and son-in-law: Beth & Floyd Tucker of Chula; two grand children and five great grandchildren; two sisters: Lorna Lawrence of Elberton and Martha Claire Gunn of Swainsboro. He was preceded in death by his wife: Virginia Blalock Meeks.
