Obituary

Rose (Shore) Kornwitz, a resident of Coventry, Rhode Island, formerly of Chelsea & Revere, entered into eternal rest on February 8, 2008 at the Riverview Nursing Care Facility. She was 91 years old & the wife of the late Jack Kornwitz who entered into rest in 1982.

Born Rya Shore in Odessa, Russia on March 9, 1916, Mrs. Kornwitz was the daughter of the late David & Sarah (Levovsky) Shore. As a child she did not like the name Rya and eventually convinced her mother to allow her to change her name to Rose, a decision she later regretted as she grew to think of Rya as a beautiful name. During the Bolshevik revolution, Mrs. Kornwitz emigrated with her family to the United States through Ellis Island in 1923, settling in Chelsea. She was educated in the Chelsea schools, a graduate of Chelsea High School, & also attended Hebrew school in Chelsea. When she was a young girl her parents established a grocery store in Chelsea where she often worked. Friends introduced her to Jacob “Jack” Kornwitz a man she had met at a social club that they both attended. Jack would go to play cards while Rose stayed with the crochet & knitting group. They connected at a Hebrew School breakfast & began their life together. Mrs. Kornwitz considered her adult life to be that of a happy homemaker. She thoroughly enjoyed raising her 2 sons who in her words brought her nothing but simchas. Though she never proclaimed herself to be a great cook, she enjoyed making homemade chicken soup, matzo balls, & gefilte fish for her sons. In addition to crochet & knitting, she also enjoyed playing Bridge. Prior to having children, she worked as a bookkeeper for her brothers business & for a short time, Mrs. Kornwitz was employed by Gilchrest Dept. Store at Downtown Crossing in Boston, however realizing nothing was getting done at home while she was not there she decided to stay at home caring for her children & the house. A resident of Chelsea for most of her life, Mrs. Kornwitz was also a resident at the Jack Satter House in Revere, & a resident of Coventry, R.I. for the past 7 years.

She is survived by her beloved sons, Norman (an orthopedic surgeon) & his wife Risa of East Greenwich, R.I. & David (a senior consulting actuary) & his wife Diane of Wellesley; & her cherished grandchildren, Jason, Jenna, Jeremy, & Jacob. She was pre-deceased by her brothers, George, Bernie, & Leo Shore.
