Octavia A. (Ormsby) Houtman, 83, of New Bedford died Wednesday January 29, 2003 unexpectedly at home. She was the wife of the late Charles C. Houtman, Sr.
Born in Torrington, Connecticut, the daughter of the Orton and Ella (Treadway) Ormsby, she lived in New Bedford for most of her life.
She was a former member of the Douglass Memorial A.M.E. Zion Church.
Mrs. Houtman was formerly employed as a salesperson in the Lingerie Department at the Star Store for many years until her retirement.
She was a graduate of New Bedford High School. She was a member of the Ladies of the Grand Army of the Republic.
Survivors include 2 nephews, George Ormsby of Brockton and Arnold Ormsby of New Bedford; 2 stepgranddaughters, Carolyn Antunes of Dartmouth and Gloria Houtman of New Bedford; several step-great-grandchildren; and other nieces and nephews.She was the mother of the late Phillip Glover, stepmother of the late Charles C. Houtman, Jr., and sister of the late Oscar Ormsby and George Ormsby.
Her Funeral Service will be held on Monday February 3, 2003 at 11 AM in the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New Bedford. Burial will follow in Pine Grove Cemetery. Visiting hours will be on Monday morning from 10-11 AM prior to the service.
