BEVERLY: Dorothy H. (LeGrow) Stead, 89, died Wednesday, February 6, 2008 at the Harborlight House in Beverly. She was the wife of the late John E. Stead who died in June of 1967.
Born in Chelsea on November 8, 1918, she was the daughter of the late Rubin and Mary (Hampton) LeGrow. She had resided in Chelsea and Malden for many years before becoming a resident of the Harborlight House in Beverly in September 2003. She was a graduate of the Chelsea High School, class of 1936 and the Chelsea Memorial School of Nursing, class of 1938.
Dorothy was employed as a registered nurse for forty-eight years at the Central Hospital in Somerville. She retired there as the office manager in 1985. In retirement, she worked part-time at the former Bank of New England in Malden.
She was a member and past district president of the United Methodist Women’s Club. She was also a member of the Chelsea Women’s Club, Eastern Star, Rebecca Lodge and the Old and New Women’s Club of Malden. Dorothy was also a member of the former Mount Bellingham Methodist Church in Chelsea and the former Centre United Methodist Church in Malden.
She is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Brenda and Ronald Spence of Beverly and Carolyn and Robert Drover of Revere, a stepdaughter, Merlene and her husband, George Toomey of Danvers, two stepsons, John A. and his wife, Nora Stead of ME, and Robert and his wife, Patricia Stead of FL, a sister, Mildred Smallman of Saugus, six grandchildren, Christine L’Heureux of Newburyport, Robin Scibilia of Groveland, Daniel Drover of North Andover, Debra Drover and George Toomey both of Beverly and Richard Toomey of North Andover and many loving great-grandchildren and nieces. She was also predeceased by three sisters, Sadie Kudelka, Myrtle Cataldo and Charlotte King.
Her funeral services will be held on Monday in the Grondin Funeral Home, 376 Cabot Street, Beverly at 10 a.m. Visiting hours will be held on Sunday from 2 – 6 p.m. Relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in her memory to the Harborlight House, One Monument Sq., Beverly, MA 01915. Interment will be held in the Woodlawn Cemetery in Everett.
