A life long resident of Woburn, Mary Wells was born on Lake St. the oldest of the five Burke girls. Known as “Ma”, to her children and many grandchildren, Mary will long be remembered for the parties at her home. Wearing a dress in her favorite color, red, Mary played the piano at family parties often with a young grandchild on the bench next to her. Mary Wells was devoted to her family but most especially to the great love of her life, her husband, Joe. Mary was a nurse in a doctor’s office and Joe was the doctor’s driver. According to both, it was love at first sight. Married at what Mary described as the “ancient age of twenty three”, Mary and Joe were together for sixty-three years. After his death, Mary always had a picture of “my Joe” near her.
