Milton Gantman, a resident of Scituate & formerly of Winthrop, entered into rest on February 1, 2008 at the Caritas Carney Hospital in Dorchester. He was 86 years old.
Born in Buenos Aires, Argentina on September 24, 1921, the son of the late Louis & Nahama (Don) Gantman, he was educated in the Boston Public School system & a graduate of Louisiana State University. He enlisted in the United States Marine Corps on March 17, 1942 in Baton Rouge, LA. Mr. Gantman was certified as a rifle sharpshooter & saw action in the Pacific Area where he participated in action against the enemy at Anguar Islands & Palau Islands. He was issued the Honorable Service Lapel Button & the Good Conduct Medal at Camp Lejeune, NC. He was honorably discharged with the rank of corporal on February 2, 1946. After returning from military service, Mr. Gantman was employed in the food industry as a food broker for many years. Mr. Gantman was a Life Master Bridge Player, member of the Jewish War Veterans & the Masons.
Mr. Gantman was the husband of Pearl (Barron) Gantman of Scituate & the late Charlotte (Edelstein) Gantman who entered into rest in 1977. He was the father of Elisabeth Chase & her husband Gerald of Worcester, Diane Gantman & her husband Robert Weiss of Dorchester, Jonathan Gantman of Allston, & Kathryn Gantman-Lillis & her husband Stephen of Framingham; loving grandfather of Sharon, Brian, Stephanie, Charlotte, Nora, & Aaron; & dear brother of Sidney Gantman of Michigan & Edna Tarutz of Newton. He is also survived by many loving nieces & nephews, his step-children, Cheryl Tessler & her husband Michael of Hingham & Harvey Gates & his wife Susan of Scituate, as well as several step-grandchildren & step-great-grandchildren.
Graveside funeral services will be held on Tuesday, February 5, 2008 at 11:00 AM in the Tifereth Israel of Winthrop Cemetery, 232 Fuller St. Everett. Rabbi Alfred Benjamin of Temple Shalom of Milton will officiate. Memorial observance will be held at his late residence in Scituate on Tuesday ONLY, & then at the home of Diane Gantman & Robert Weiss in Dorchester through Sunday, February 10, 2008.
