Thomas F. Burns, a lifelong resident of Charlestown, died on Friday February 1, 2008 at The Chelsea Soldiers Home in Chelsea following a long illness. He was 83 years old.
Tom was born in Boston on July 31, 1924. He grew up in Charlestown where he attended Boston Public Schools and graduated from Charlestown High School in 1942. He enlisted into the United States Navy on June 3, 1942. He served during World War 2 and was discharged on November 7, 1945 with the rank of Fireman First Class. Tom worked as a truck driver for which is now known as The Boston Herald Newspaper for almost 35 years and retired in 1987. He also volunteered and was involved in the Charlestown Youth Hockey program for several years.
Tom is the beloved husband of 61 years to Ellen C. (Burke) Burns. He is the devoted father of Laney Burns-Wadman of Charlestown, Thomas Burns of Chelsea, Paul Burns of Mansfield and James Burns of Londonderry, New Hampshire. He is the loving grandfather of 8 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren. He is the beloved brother of Rita Donahue of Bridgewater and the late George Burns.
Tom's Funeral will be held on Wednesday February 6, 2008 at 10 a.m. from the Carr Funeral Home, 220 Bunker Hill St. Charlestown followed by his Funeral Mass in St. Mary's Church, 55 Warren St. Charlestown at 11 a.m. Relatives and friends are invited. Visiting hours for Tom will be on Tuesday February 5, 2008 from 4 to 8 p.m. Burial will take place at the Veterans National Cemetery, Bourne.
