TEWKSBURY - Margaret B. (Latta) Codner, R.N., age 83, died peacefully on Wednesdaymorning, January 29th, at her home following an extended illness. She was the wife of Nicholas“Fred” Codner, with whom she would have celebrated a 55th wedding anniversary in March.
Mrs. Codner was born in Washington, D.C., Sept. 14, 1919, the daughter of the late William andSarah (O’Boyle) Latta. She was raised in Somerville and educated in St. Clement’s and St.Joseph’s parochial schools in Somerville. She graduated from the Somerville High School, andwent on to study nursing at St. Vincent’s Nursing School in Worcester.
During WWII, she enlisted into the U.S. Army and served in the capacity of nurse in the Pacific-Asiatic War Theater. She was awarded the American Theater, Asiatic Pacific Service and theWWII Victory Medals.
Upon discharge from the Army, she worked in several hospitals. She moved to Tewksbury in1951, and became a staff member at the Castle Nursing Home in Tewksbury. She later became amember of the nursing staff at Tewksbury Hospital, and during her 20 years there, she attainedthe position of Night Nursing Supervisor. Upon retirement, she remained active at the OblateFather’s Infirmary in Tewksbury .
She was a daily communicant at the 9:00 weekday Mass at St. William’s Church, where she alsoserved on several alter committees.In her later years, she was active in the Senior community, and became a F.I.S.H. driver, a foodprogram that would evolve into the “meals-on-wheels” program. She was also enjoyed crochetneedlework.
Mrs. Codner, along with her family, helped raise more than 30 foster infants and foster childrenduring her lifetime.
Besides her husband, she is survived by five daughters and sons-in-law; Noel and her husbandDennis St Aubin of Santa Clara, CA, Sheila and her husband Paul Annino of Rindge, NH,Kathleen Cameron of Merrimack, NH, Margaret and her husband Robert Gibbons of Tewksbury,Noelle and her husband Frank Ruggiero of Lowell, three sons and daughters-in-law; Nicholas Jr.and his wife Cynthia (O’Brien) Codner of Londonderry, NH, William and his wife Cheryl(O’Connell) Codner of Billerica, Robert and his wife Lisa (Beaumier) Codner of Tewksbury, abrother and sister-in-law; Henry and his wife Ann (Cocheran) Latta of Wilmington, two sistersand a brother-in-law, Mary and her husband Ralph Holder of Burlington, Theresa Monagle ofSomerville, a sister-in-law; Esther (Reale) Latta of Tewksbury, 22 grandchildren, and two greatgrandchildren.
She was also sister of the late John Latta, and William and Edward Latta, who both died in WWIIcombat.
Her FuneralMass was held Saturday, Feb. 1, in St. William’s Church. Burial was in Tewksbury Cemetery.
