Obituary

James P. Hanabury, of Plymouth, 84, on January 22nd at Windsor Skilled Nursing Home in Yarmouth. Mr. Hanabury is survived by his beloved wife Mary (Blanchard) of Plymouth, his son James E. Hanabury of Keene, NH, his step son Bill Lambert and his wife Maria of CA and his step daughter Janet Preston and her husband David of ME, 5 grandchildren, 1 great granddaughter and many nieces and nephews. James was the father of the late Kathleen Hanabury and brother of the late Edward Hanabury and Mary Shields. After graduating from North Quincy High School, he attended the University of Arizona, MIT and North Eastern. Mr. Hanabury worked as a civil engineer for New York Department of Bridges, the Army Corp of Engineers and the Boston Housing and Urban Development. He served during WWII in the U.S Navy receiving 6 battle stars. He served on the USS Algorab, the USS Tuscaloosa in Iceland of deck force. While serving in Iceland he was transporting 27 men to another boat skiff in hurricane conditions and in the dark, the boat took on water and only James and 2 other men who were wearing life jackets survived. James was picked up by a British skiff that took him to the HMS Kenya where he stayed for 3 days. He also served on the USS Boyle, a destroyer built at the Quincy Shipyard, sent to England for 2 years to train guns crews and participated in the D-Day Invasion. James other passion was baseball, he was signed to the Boston Braves and in 1950 he was signed with the St. Louis Cardinals though after an injury was then signed to the Halifax Capitals in Nova Scotia. At the age of 40 he was pitching for the Somerville Boston Red Sox of the Boston Park League. His performance there earned him a place in the league’s Hall of Fame in 2005. During the 1960’s he was a batting practice pitcher for the Boston Red Sox, pitching to Carl Yastrzemski, Tony Conigliaro and George Scott. James also volunteered at the Jordan Hospital for many years. A funeral service will be held at the Christ Episcopal Church in Plymouth on Saturday February 2nd at 11 AM. There are no visiting hours and burial is private. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to the American Alzheimer’s Association, P.O Box 408, Watertown, MA 02471-0408 or to the charity of one’s choice.
