Obituary

Mr. John L. Hanley of Medford died Wednesday at the Lawrence Memorial Hospital following a lengthy illness. He was 83. He is the husband of Marie (Fusco) Hanley with whom he shared more than 57 years of marriage. Born in Boston, he was the son of the late Timothy and the late Delia (Ward) Hanley. A graduate of Roxbury High School, class of 1940, he enlisted in the U.S.Navy. He served in both WWII and the Korean Conflict. After the service he was appointed to the the position of Patrolman with the Boston Police Department in 1947. He served many parts of the city mostly as a Detective at Station 11 in Dorchester and at Station 15 in Charlestown. Jack was a former Little League coach in South Medford. Well known by the neighborhood children as the “guy with the ice cream”. Mr. Hanley was an avid sports fan and rooted for the Patriots. He enjoyed traveling, and taking cruises, dancing and attending his naval reunions. In addition to being a loving husband and family man, he was a member of the Medford Elks, the VFW and American Legion.

In addition to his wife he is the father of Maria Hanley and her husband Robert Galante of Reading, Frances Mahoney of Salem, Linda Jonuskis of Reading, Lisa Hanley and her companion Bill Hairston of Malden, John Hanley of Medford, Timothy Hanley and his wife Teresa of Medford, Patrick Hanley and Francine Rimpkis. He is a loving grandfather to John D'Antonio, Marc D'Antonio, Peter D'Antonio, Anna Hanley, Shannon Hairston, Ryan Jonuskis, Timothy Hanley, Brandon Hanley, Katie Hanley, Lily Hanley and Patrick Mahoney. He is a loving great-grandfather to Giovanni Shukraft D'Antonio, Peter Mallard and Emilia Grace Mahoney. He is a dear brother to Helen Berrigan and her husband Jim of Harwich and the late Marty and Joseph Hanley, Margaret Sullivan and Catherine “Sis” Murphy.

His funeral will be from the Dello Russo Funeral Home, 306 Main St., Medford, Tuesday at 9 am followed by a funeral mass celebrated in St. Raphael Church, 512 High Street, Medford, at 10 am. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend and may visit with the family, Monday 4 thru 8. Services will conclude with burial at Oak Grove Cemetery, Medford.
