John P. Harrington, 80, of New Bedford died Friday January 24, 2003 at St. Luke's Hospital after a long illness. He was the husband of Phyllis (Howarth) Harrington.
Born in New Bedford, the son of the late Jeremiah and Ellen (Cronin) Harrington, he lived in New Bedford for all of his life.
He was a communicant of Holy Name of the Sacred Heart of Jesus Church.
Mr. Harrington was formerly employed as a letter carrier for the United States Postal Service in New Bedford until his retirement.
Mr. Harrington served in the U.S. Navy during World War II aboard the submarine U.S.S. Chivo in the Pacific theater, and was a recipient of the Asiatic-Pacific Area ribbon, the American Area ribbon, the Submarine Qualified Insignia and the World War II Victory medal.
He was a member of the Friendly Sons of St. Patrick and the National Association of Letter Carrier Retirees.
Survivors include his wife; 5 daughters, Maura Harrington, Joan Sopel and her husband Dale, and Eileen Harrington, all of New Bedford, Ann Ibara and her husband Richard, of Dartmouth and Margaret Harrington and her husband Eugene Jones, of Acushnet; 3 sons, Sean Harrington of New Bedford, Seamus Harrington and his wife Nancy, of Acushnet, and Daniel Harrington and his wife Debra, of Dunellen, New Jersey; 2 brothers, Edmund A. Harrington of Dartmouth and James M. Harrington of New Bedford; 8 grandchildren, Liliana and Kaitlin Ibara, Daniel and Elizabeth Sopel, and Michael, Thomas, Liam, and Erin Harrington; and several nieces and nephews.He was the brother of the late Patrick Harrington and Francis Harrington.
Funeral from the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New BedfordMonday January 27, 2003 at 10 AM.Funeral Mass at Holy Name of the Sacred Heart of Jesus Church at 11 AM.Relatives and friends are invited to attend. Visiting hours will be on Sunday January 26, 2003 from 3-7 PM. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery.
