Harold L. Buttrey, 84 of Oneonta, New York died January 11 in the Medway Country Manor. He was the husband of Simone (Fraser) Buttrey.
Born in Corning, New York, July 19, 1923 the son of the late Leroy and Lillian (Comfort) Buttrey, Mr. Buttrey was raised in Elmira, New York and had lived in Corning for many years before moving to Oneonta 25 years ago.
Mr. Buttrey was a graduate of Elmira High School.
Mr. Buttrey had been a salesman for the ZEP Cleaning Company before retiring. He had also owned and operated his own custom jewelry company in Corning and Oneonta.
Mr. Buttrey loved to go antiquing and to play golf.
Mr. Buttrey served in the Army during World War II and was a member of the 101 Airborne Division and attained the rank of PFC. He saw action throughout Europe and was awarded the Purple Heart, the American Defense Medal, the Good Conduct Medal, the European African Middle Eastern Service Medal and Distinguished Unit Badge.
He was a member of the American Legion in Oneonta.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his son, John Buttrey of Lafayette, Indiana and his daughters, Michele Gillies of Medway and Lisa Thomas of Pittsfield.
He is also survived by his grandchildren, Nicole and Cameron Gillies and Erin Buttrey.
His memorial Mass will be celebrated on January 26 in St. Mary’s Church in Oneonta at 10:00 a.m. followed by a reception in the parish hall.
Burial will be private.
Calling hours will be held on Sunday, January 13 from 4-6 p.m. in the Ginley Crowley Funeral Home, 3 Barber St. in Medway.
