Walter P. Smith, 69, of Norton formerly of Attleboro died on Wednesday January 9, 2008 at Morton Hospital in Taunton. He was the beloved husband of Sandra L. (Danti) Smith to whom he was wed to on July 2, 1967.
Born in Boston, MA on December 5, 1938 he was a son of the late Edward Smith and the late Gerald and Thelma (Tucker) Tucker, Sr.
He grew up in the Dorchester section of Boston and was educated in Boston schools. Upon graduation from high school he enlisted in the United States Air Force, received his training in Texas and was stationed in Iceland prior to being honorably discharged in 1962.
Walter originally began his career in weather research and as a meteorologist. In 1969 he started a new career in real estate and worked for the former Briggs & Hutchinson Real Estate Co. in Taunton. In 1980 he ventured out on his own and established W.P. Smith, Realtors in Norton.
A communicant of St. John the Evangelist Church in Attleboro, he was a member of the Board of Realtors and the Norton Lions Club
His hobbies included flying, of which he was the proud owner of his own airplane. His other interests included boating and fishing.
Mr. Smith had lived in Norton for the past year and was a former resident of Attleboro for over 25 years and had also formerly lived in East Taunton.
In addition to his beloved wife of over 40 years he is survived by his devoted children; Donna M. Smith of Lakeville, Douglas G. Smith of Jacksonville, Florida, Duane E. Smith and his wife Lisa of Attleboro, Jeffrey W. Smith and his wife Rosa of San Antonio, Texas and Christopher L. Smith of Dorchester, He was the brother of Gerald Tucker, Jr. of Taunton, Marilyn Sanchez of Port Charlotte, Florida and the late Peter Smith and William Mitchum, also surviving are his cherished 5 grandchildren, 1 great grandson as well as several nieces and nephews.
His funeral, to which relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend, will be held on Tuesday January 15th at 8:30 A.M. from the Norton Memorial Funeral Home 19 Clapp St. (Off Route 140, Taunton Ave.) Norton followed by a Mass of Christian burial celebrated at 10:00 A.M. in St. John the Evangelist Church, 133 North Main St., Attleboro Burial with military honors will follow in the Timothy Plain Cemetery, Norton.
Visiting hours will be held on Monday January 14th from 5-8 P.M. at the Norton Memorial Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers, Walter’s family has requested that donations in his memory be made to the Massachusetts Lions Eye Research Care of Norton Lions Club P.O. Drawer I Norton, MA 02766.
