Obituary

Jack Wilkes, 77, of Ocilla, died Friday, January 4, 2008 at his residence.

Funeral services will be held 11:00 AM, Monday, January 7, 2008 at Ocilla Baptist Church with Rev. Marty Wilkes officiating. Interment will follow in the Evergreen Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7-9 Sunday evening at the funeral home in Ocilla.

Mr. Wilkes was born May 23, 1930 in Hazlehurst, Georgia to the late Willie Oscar and Nora Gladys Hazel Wilkes. He had lived most of his life in Irwin County and was retired as a Line Foreman for Irwin EMC after 42 years of service. Following his retirement, he served as a Director for Irwin EMC. He was a U.S. Army Veteran of the Korean War Era. He was a sports official for high school athletics and a little league coach. He was a Mason, a member of Ocilla Baptist Church, the Elks Club and the Moose Lodge.

Mr. Wilkes is survived by his wife: Katherine M. Wilkes of Ocilla; son and daughter-in-law: Marty & Karen Wilkes of Douglas; step-sons and their wives: Glenn & Ingrid House of Kathleen and Donald & Glenda Young of Ocilla; eight grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and two sisters and a brother-in-law: Melba Paulk Veazey & Ralph of Tifton and Myrtis Howard of Albany. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a step-son: Joe Irwin Young, Jr.

The family suggests those desiring to send memorials in lieu of flowers may send them to Ocilla Baptist Church, P.O. Box 101, Ocilla, GA 31774 or to the donor’s favorite charity.
