Obituary

John J. Powers, Sr., 88 of Medway died January 3 in the University of Massachusetts Medical Center in Worcester. He was the husband of Regina A. (Matusky) Powers for the past 57 years.
Born in Milford, December 25, 1919 the son of the late James and Catherine (Rogers) Powers, Mr. Powers had lived in Medway for most of his life.
Mr. Powers was a 1937 graduate of Medway High School.
Mr. Powers had worked for over thirty years at the Boston Naval Shipyard, retiring as chief time keeper.
He had previously worked in the insurance division of the Veterans Administration office in Boston.
Following his retirement, Mr. Powers worked at Weston Nurseries.
Mr. Powers served in the 83rd Airdrome Squadron of the Army Air Corps during World War II attaining the rank of Private First Class. He was awarded the Good Conduct Medal and the European African Middle Eastern Campaign Medal with 2 bronze service stars.
He was a member of the Medway V.F.W.
Mr. Powers had formerly been a coach in Medway Little League and had been active in St. Joseph Church Band and Color Guard.
Mr. Powers was an avid fan of the Boston Red Sox.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his son, John J. Powers Jr. and his wife, Elizabeth of San Francisco, CA and his daughters, Helen J. Butcher and her husband, Robert of Medway and Nancy A. Mandino and her husband, Michael of Medway.
He is also survived by his grandchildren, Ryan, Liam and Kyra Powers, Stella Butcher and Meghan Mandino and his sister, Katherine Frink of Millis.
He was the brother of the late Mary McCormack and Marguerite Small.
His funeral will be held on Tuesday January 8 from the Ginley-Crowley Funeral Home, 3 Barber St., Medway at 9:15 a.m. followed by a funeral Mass in St. Joseph Church at 10:00.
Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery in Medway.
Calling hours will be on Monday from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m.
