Donald W. ‘Sandy” Smith Jr. of Needham died on Saturday, December 29th at the Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital in Needham. He was 80 years old. Born in New London, Connecticut, Sandy was a graduate of Needham High School Class of 1945. At Needham High he was class presidentand captain of the varsity football, hockey and baseball teams. After graduating from high school he joined the Merchant Marine and US Army during World War II. After the War he attended Yankton University in South Dakota. Sandy worked for many years as a salesman for Syracuse China. For over the last 25 years he was the captain of “SEA FOX”, a charter fishing boat, operating out of Falmouth Harbor. Sandy was active with the Dedham Youth Hockey Program during its formative years. He was the dear father of Donna Lawson of Cumberland RI, Brian Smith of Needham, Douglas Smith of Falmouth, Tracy Downing of Dedham and Barry Smith of Bellingham. Also survived by many grandchildren. He was the former husband of Norine (Coyle) Smith and loving companion of Patricia Goodwin of Needham. Visiting Hours will be held Sunday Jan 6 from 12-2 PM at the Eaton Funeral Home 1351 Highland Ave Needham, followed by a Memorial Service at 2.00PM. Relatives and friends are kindly invited. Interment will be private.
