Obituary

Sister Catherine McCarthy (formerly Sister M. Anselm), 86, a Sister of Mercy for 61 years, died Friday, December 28, after a long illness.

A native of Dover, N.H., she was the daughter of Michael and Mary (McCarthy) McCarthy.

Sister Catherine received her B.S. and M.A. degrees in education from Mt. St. Mary College, Hooksett, N.H. During her years as a teacher she served at Our Lady of Perpetual Help, St. Joseph, and McDonald Schools in Manchester; St. Rose of Lima in Littleton; St. Patrick in Berlin; Sacred Heart in Lebanon; St. Christopher in Nashua; and St. Mary in Dover. She also tutored students at Mt. St. Mary Day School in Manchester.

After retiring from teaching, Sister Catherine served in the Business Office of the Sisters of Mercy in Windham and assisted in the community’s archives. She also did clerical work at the offices of the Diocese of Manchester.

Sister Catherine was actively involved in the Associate Program of the Sisters of Mercy, serving as director from 1989 to 1991.

Family members include two sisters, Margaret Tenereillo of San Diego, California, and Elizabeth Donovan of Brighton, Mass., many nieces and nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.

Friends may call at the Warde Health Center, 21 Searles Road, Windham, NH, from 3 to 6 p.m. on Wednesday, January 2, 2008. A prayer service will be held in Our Lady of Mercy Chapel, Sisters of Mercy in Windham at 6 p.m. on Wednesday. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in Our Lady of Mercy Chapel at 11 a.m. on Thursday, January 3. Burial will be at Saint Joseph Cemetery, Bedford, N.H.
